Illini In Seventh at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A group of University of Illinois swimmers and divers is gaining experience this weekend at the Indiana Invitational. The Illini have 74 points after 10 events, which places them seventh in the eight-team tournament. The host Indiana Hoosiers are in first place with a team total of 356 points.
"We had a good day," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "The girls who are here are racing very well, and they are starting to put together some of the fundamentals that we have been working on.."
The top performance of the day for the Illini came in the first event. Senior Noelle Wilhite, sophomore Kristin Lyons, junior Ashley Braun and freshman Laura O'Connor teamed up to finish sixth in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.28. Sophomore Alison Czmarko swam the 200 individual medley in 2:10.45 to place 13th. Wilhite had a strong swim in the 50 yard freestyle finishing 12th with a time of 24.67. Lyons swam a personal best time of 24.80 in the 50 free to finish 14th.
The Fighting Illini diving corps also showed improvement Junior Andrea Powelski finished 14th in the 3 meter competition with a score of 352.05. Freshman Lisa Fish took 16th in the competition and junior Toni Eckert finished 17th.
"They did well against some of the best competition they will see until the Big Ten Championships," diving coach Josh Seykora said.
Coach Novitsky is looking forward to racing again tomorrow because the experience is so much like it will be at the Big Ten Championships. Saturday will be the second day of the three-day invitational. "The main reason for bringing the young team is to practice swimming at a three day meet. Hopefully they will come out strong again tomorrow."
