Sept. 25, 1999
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Nell Macke (Marshall, Ill.) shot a first-round 78 and led the
Illini women's golf team to a team score of 322 Saturday at the Mary
Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Macke shot a 3-over 39 on
both the front and back nines for her score of 6-over 78, which is her
collegiate low. The team is in 11th place, only one stroke out of a tie
for eighth place.
Freshman Laurin Kanda (Chico, Calif.), who led the Illini in the
season opener last week, shot a 79 on Saturday and another freshman,
Renata Young (Rogers, Ark.), also carded a 79. Lorette Lyttle (Sr., West
Palm Beach, Fla.) provided the final score for the team total, an 86.
Also competing in the first round were Stephanie Cheney (Fr., Mill
Valley, Calif.) and Christine Scott (Sr., Lockport, Ill.). Both golfers
shot 88 on Saturday.
Teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on
Sunday, but the tournament was delayed on Saturday morning because of
frost on the course and darkness prohibited all teams from finishing the
afternoon round. As a result, only the scores from the first 18 holes
were available on Saturday. Teams will finish the second round Sunday at
7:45 a.m. and then begin play in the final round.
