For the second time in a four-week period, Illini senior D.A. Points has been named the men's Big Ten Golfer of the Week. He earned the designation after posting back-to-back scores of 1-under par 70 in the final two rounds and taking medalist honors at the Marshall Invitational last weekend. He tallied a 1-under par 212 for the tournament after shooting 72-70-70.
In the process of winning his third title of the year, Points finished ahead of 39 other Big Ten golfers who were participating in the tournament.
Points currently ranks 10th in the standings for the Golfstat Cup, awarded annually to the men's collegiate golfer with the lowest yearly scoring average. He leads the team with a 71.6 average in 23 rounds. He has won three tournaments this year and has placed among the top four individuals in three of four spring events.
Points is the first Illinois golfer since Steve Stricker to post three victories in a season. Stricker had five in 1989. Other Illini tournament winners in the 1990s are Kevin Fairfield, who won two tournaments in 1990; Ben Bruce, who took first in one event in 1991, and Jamie Fairbanks, who had two wins in 1993.
