
Illinois Holding Seventh Place In Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Illinois freshman Laurin Kanda (Chico, Calif.) is in third place after the first round of the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She shot a 4-over-par 77 on the 5,962 yard University of Michigan Golf Course. Kanda is four strokes off the lead heading into rounds two and three tomorrow.
The other two freshmen have also started the weekend on a high note. Renata Young (Rogers, Ark.) is in a 4-way tie for 10th at 81. The other newcomer, Stephanie Cheney (Mill Valley, Calif.) shot an 87 placing her in a tie for 47th.
The strong play by the freshmen has placed Illinois seventh out of 14 teams. At 335, the Illini are just five strokes behind Notre Dame and Illinois State who are tied for fifth.
Three seniors are also participating for the Illini. Christine Scott (Lockport, Ill.) is tied for 68th with 90. A first round 92 has Nell Macke (Marshall, Ill.) tied for 72. Lorette Lyttle (West Palm Beach, Fla.) is one stroke behind Macke at 93 placing her in a tie for 75th.
The Illini hope to continue improving as they finish up the Michigan Invitational tomorrow.
