Newburgh, Ind. - Fighting Illini Men's Golf used a 24-under par third-round score to take a 13-stroke victory at the 2016 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship. Illinois earns its second consecutive Big Ten trophy and its seventh title in eight years. Trailing Iowa by eight strokes heading into the final round, UI carded 34 birdies and an eagle, and saw all five players shoot 4-under par or better on the day. Senior Thomas Detry (-10) shot 8-under par for the day to earn medalist honors and finish just one stroke ahead of senior Charlie Danielson (-9) who earned the Big Ten's Les Bolstad Award. All five Illini placed among the top-20 individuals at the tournament.

"This is huge for our seniors," head coach Mike Small said of the team's victory. "These have been the best four years of Illinois Golf and they have been a part of it. For Thomas to win today, now we have three Big Ten Champions on our team. The way we handled adversity yesterday was not our team. We had to get back to who we are, and I think they saw that. We had a good, long gut-check last night and talked about a lot of things. I'm proud of all of them. To throw out a 4-under par is pretty strong. This was a special day, it really was."

As a team, the Illini shot a 264 in the final round, which marks a new school 18-hole record. The previous record was set at 268, recorded at both the 2015 Boilermaker Invitational and the 2013 Macdonald Cup. Illinois' 54-hole score of 838 also marks a Big Ten Championship record, besting the previous mark of 842 scored by Ohio State in 2004. Detry's fourth round 64 stands as a Victoria National course record, and is just one shy of Illinois' lowest 18-hole score. Detry marks the sixth consecutive Big Ten Championship medalist from Illinois and the 18th overall. The Illini have won 14 team titles in program history.

"It mean's a lot, it was a lot of fun to battle it out with Charlie, but getting that individual title means a lot to me, especially as a senior," Detry said of his medalist honors. "Walking off the course with the Big Ten title is huge. Not only that, but the team title is a major accomplishment. We were chasing today, but everyone got off to a great start and got after it. There were great vibes out on the course and this morning when we woke up. Everyone played well today and I think we all had fun."

Detry got off to a very strong start on the morning, birdieing the second hole and continuing on to make eagle on hole three. He added one more birdie on the fourth hole for good measure. Detry shot 4-under par on the front nine and went on to add four more birdies on his back nine.

Danielson was also on fire right off the bat. He birdied five holes on the front nine, making par on the other four. He carded back-to-back birdies after making the turn, and closed the day 7-under par.

"It's huge," Danielson said of the team's victory. "Thomas and I have had a great four years here and this is probably one of the most special days of college golf for us, and I'm sure for him. The whole team played great today, it's definitely one to remember."

Playing in front of his hometown crowd, sophomore Dylan Meyer closed the day 4-under par and earned a ninth place finish. He birdied back-to-back holes before making the turn, and added three more on the back nine.

Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli put up a career-low 68 in Sunday's final round. He started the day at even par, but picked up the momentum to record six birdies on the final nine holes. Lipparelli earned his third top-20 finish of the season, taking 17th overall.

Sophomore Nick Hardy also got on the birdie train early in the day, he started out with three in a row on the front nine before birdieing four consecutive holes on the back nine. Hardy tied for 20th individually with a third-round tally 5-under par.

The Illini were joined among the top-three teams in the tournament by Iowa (-13) and Maryland (+2).

Held at the Par 72, 7,242-yard course at Victoria National Golf Club, coverage of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships will air on the Big Ten Network May 1. The broadcast is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
