West Lafayette, Ind. - Fighting Illini men's golf earned its second consecutive event title this afternoon, with a seven-stroke victory at the Boilermaker Invitational. As a team the Illini shot 17-under par, led by senior Charlie Danielson who took medalist honors at the tournament with a final score 9-under par. All six Illini competing finished among the top-25 individually.
"Any time we can get a win we are happy," head coach Mike Small said. "Winning is a habit that we take pride in, and our goal is to win every week. Winning is an expectation that we're comfortable with, although we realize that winning is a product of our play. As a coach, I'm thankful for a big lead this weekend. We didn't have our best today, but it was good enough to hold on for the win. There were some good teams there that played well today and put some heat on us, we need to continue to make closing out tournaments a priority."
Danielson (-9) started his day off strongly, birdieing his first hole. He went on to notch three consecutive birdies on the front nine, before making two bogeys midway through the day. Danielson added one more birdie to his total before concluding the final round at even par.Â
Sophomore Nick Hardy (-6) finished just three strokes back from Danielson to take second overall. He shot 2-under par on the final round, recording three birdies to negate an early bogey on the day. The second place finish is Hardy's highest of the season and his sixth among the top-15.Â
"Charlie and Nick played solid," Small said. Â "I'm happy for the success they had. Now, our entire program is switching our attention to the Big Ten Championships next week."
Senior Thomas Detry continued his steady play on Sunday, finishing the final round at even par to also remain even on the tournament. Detry tied for 14th individually, tallying four birdies to close the tournament. Detry has finished among the top-15 in six tournaments this season.Â
Competing in the lineup for the second tournament this spring, freshman Edoardo Lipparelli finished 1-over par to tie for 18th overall. Lipparelli shot 4-over par through the final round of play.Â
Sophomore Dylan Meyer and redshirt senior Alex Burge tied for 22nd individually, finishing the tournament 3-over par. Meyer started his day with a birdie on the first hole, adding another on the front nine. A few bogeys late in the round put him at 4-over par for the day. Burge, playing as an individual for the tournament, shot 3-over par for the final round. His 22nd place finish marks the highest for the senior during the spring season.Â
The Illini will return to Champaign to prepare for the upcoming Big Ten Championships next weekend. The tournament will be held at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., April 22-24.Â
