CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois junior Bren Spillane was named Big Ten Player of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday. Spillane was also voted a unanimous choice for All-Big Ten first team and is joined on the All-Big Ten selections by Illini Michael Massey (second team), Ben Troike (second team), Doran Turchin (third team) and Joey Gerber (third team). Jackson Douglas was picked as Illinois' Sportsmanship Award winner.
Bren Spillane - Big Ten Player of the Year, All-Big Ten first team
Spillane is the 10th Illinois player in history to win Big Ten Player of the Year and third in the last six years. He won the Big Ten regular season triple crown by batting .407 with 22 homers and 57 RBIs and also led the league in slugging (.944), OBP (.512), OPS (1.456) and total bases (153). He ranks third in the Big Ten in runs (53), third in doubles (17), ninth in hits (66) and 13th in steals (14).
Spillane was the leading candidate for Player of the Year since March when he won a conference record three straight Big Ten Player of the Week awards. He is one of 25 players in the nation named semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award.

Michael Massey - All-Big Ten second team
Massey put together one of the best all-around seasons in the Big Ten, batting .337 with five home runs and committing just one error while starting every game at second base. He tied Spillane with 17 doubles, while slugging .522, and led the Big Ten in hits during conference games (37). It is his second All-Big Ten honor after being named third team in 2017 as a freshman.
Massey was edged by Maryland's Nick Dunn for first-team honors. Dunn also hit .337 and had 10 homers to go along with 17 doubles.
Ben Troike - All-Big Ten second team
Troike's impressive 54-game reached base streak propelled him to second-team honors, his first career All-Big Ten award. He started every game at shortstop and No. 2 in the order, while hitting .304 with four home runs. Troike was second on the team with a .415 on-base percentage and .426 on-base percentage in conference games.
Minnesota's Terrin Vavra was the first-team honoree at shortstop after finishing second in the league with a .387 batting average.
Joey Gerber - All-Big Ten third team
Gerber has been one of the top closers in the nation all season long, converting 14 of 14 save opportunities. He is tied with Tyler Jay for the Illinois single-season record and two away from Jay's Illini career record of 24. He allowed only one run in 12 1/3 Big Ten innings on his way to setting the Illinois record of eight saves in a Big Ten season.
Doran Turchin - All-Big Ten third team
Turchin got hot at the end of the year, hitting .378 in the final nine Big Ten games, to help Illinois qualify as the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and earn himself All-Big Ten third team. Turchin hit .275 for the season, including .297 in conference games, along with nine home runs and 31 RBIs. He also walked 31 times, two away from Spillane's team-leading 33 base on balls.
Jackson Douglas - Sportsmanship Award
Douglas' selflessness, leadership and work ethic led him to the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award. The senior continually makes sacrifices in order to help the team, making his presence much more important than what shows up on the stat line. Douglas, a University of Illinois graduate, plans to enlist in Naval special warfare operations following the season.
