IOWA CITY, Iowa - The third-ranked Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team earned a narrow, 404.700-401.850, victory over No. 10 Iowa on Saturday at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Orange and Blue won four of the six events, highlighted by senior Brandon Ngai's 18th career pommel horse title.Â
"We came into the weekend in pursuit of a win and we got one," head coach Justin Spring said. "It was not a great score, but that's to be expected with a 65 percent hit ratio. We will continue to prepare our healthy guys as we push toward a full lineup in early March, where I think we can put up some of the best gymnastics when it matters most."
The Illini were on pommel horse first and Brandon Ngai came away with the top score of the meet, posting a 14.800. Senior Harry McLellan finished in third on the event with a 13.700.
Sophomore Sebastian Quiana earned his first event title of the season and third of his career on floor exercise, finishing with a 14.300. Junior Alex Diab wasn't far behind, totalling a 14.100 to finish second in the event.Â
