Aja Evans in Medal Contention After Day 1 of Bobsled

Evans, Greubel Poser 0.02 seconds off bronze medal position

PyeongChang, South Korea. – Former Illinois women's track and field athlete turned United States bobsledder Aja Evans, and pilot Jamie Greubel Poser, sits in fourth place at the midway point of the two-women bobsleigh competition at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The final two heats of competition will be contested tomorrow, Wednesday, February 21, at 5:40 a.m. central time.

The break woman for the sled, Evans and teammate Greubel Poser sit just 0.02 seconds off bronze medal position due to an impressive first run. With a solid 5.32 start time, Evans and Poser cruised into bronze medal position with a top speed of 133.2 kilometers per hour, 82.76 miles per hour, to lead Germany's duo of Stephanie Schneider and Annika Drazek for third place after the opening run.

Evans and Greubel Poser again finished in under 51 seconds in heat two of the day, but added four tenths of a second to their time, 50.99, to finish eighth among the second runs. Despite also having a slower second run, the Schneider-Drazek German sled picked up six hundredths of a second to take over third place.

Joining the Evans-Poser and Schneider-Drazek sleds in a tightly-contested race for the podium is Canada's sleigh, piloted by Kaillie Humphries, which is 0.02 seconds behind Evans-Poser in fifth place.

The other United States' sled, piloted by reigning silver medalist Elana Meyers Taylor, ranks second heading into heats three and four after setting a track record in their first heat. Teamed with Lauren Gibbs, the duo set a track record start time of 5.22 and downtime of 50.52 to lead all sleds. Despite resetting the start record in heat two, clocking 5.21, Germany's sled of Jamanka-Buckwitz passed the United States for gold medal position in heat two.

NBC will air both runs of the women's bobsleigh competition tonight during its nightly primetime coverage of the Games beginning at 7 p.m. central time.

The final two heats of competition will begin on Wednesday, February 21, at 5:40 a.m. central time, 8:40 p.m. locally, and will be streamed live on nbcolympics.com. The final run of competition is expected to get underway at approximately 7 a.m. central time.
