Colorado Springs, Colo. - The 2017 Men's Gymnastics National Qualifier was held this past weekend in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Rising senior Brandon Ngai and volunteer assistant coach and former Illini Jordan Valdez both qualified, with Ngai winning the event title on pommel horse and Valdez earning the vault title.
Ngai earned the event title by finishing with a score of 14.600 on pommel horse, while Valdez participated in both high bar and parallel bar competition, earning a score of 14.350 to come away with the parallel bar event title. Valdez also finished in fourth place on high bar with a score of 13.050.
Former team member and Illinois alumnus Mike Wilner also qualified at the event. The Buffalo Grove, Illinois, native earned a second-place finish on rings with a score of 14.550.
The three gymnasts will join fellow Illini team member, Chandler Eggleston at the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships in Anaheim, Calif., which will be held from Aug. 17-20. Eggleston prequalified for the event by finishing second on high bar at the NCAA Championships.
