The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced the 2016-17 Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics. These awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the season.
Illinois recorded a team GPA of 3.027 during the 2016-17 school year. The Fighting Illini were one of only three Big Ten schools to earn recognition by the NABC, joined by Purdue and Northwestern.
Illinois had a school-record eight players named to the Academic All-Big Ten team this past season. Malcolm Hill, meanwhile, was the lone basketball player in the conference to achieve Big Ten Distinguished Scholar status.
