Illini junior Kara Marbury reflects on Illinois' trip to Nicaragua

Illini junior Kara Marbury has never been out of the country before. This week, along with the Illini squad, she is taking on Central America as the Orange and Blue are partnering with Soccer Without Borders in Nicaragua. Check in with her thoughts below!

Before arriving in Nicaragua, I did not know what to expect (which can probably be said for the whole team). From never being out of the country, to only speaking "un poquito" of Spanish, I was definitely in for the experience of a lifetime. Luckily, I am getting to take on this journey with a team full of my best friends.

As we spend the next 10 days working with young women and girls who are a part of the Soccer Without Borders (SWB) program, I expect it to not only better us as soccer players, but also as leaders. A big part of what we are doing here revolves around being role models as well as showing young girls that it is possible to pursue a future in sports. Along with helping to create opportunities for girls in this community, I expect to create relationships with both the SWB coaches and athletes.
