West Lafayette, Ind. -Ā On day two of the Big Ten Championships, the Fighting Illini Swimming and Diving team competed in five events, including the 50 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 200 individual medley, the 400 medley relay, as well as one-meter diving. The highlight of the night was a school-record time in the 400 medley relay.
"We were a bit tight starting out the preliminary session this morning," said head coach Sue Novitsky. It took us a while to relax and that hurt us this morning. We rebounded well tonight and finished with another school record.
Samantha Stratford had a strong night, as the junior placed 12th in the 200 IM finals with a time of 1:59.04. The highlight of the night came in the 400 medley relay, as the relay team of Gabbie Stecker, Stratford, Megan Vuong and Audrey Rodawig finished with a school-record time of 3:41.73.
Individually, Stecker became the 2nd fastest individual in the 100 backstroke with her lead off time of :26.69.
On the Boards
In the preliminary round of one-meter diving, sophomore Madeline Kuhn placed 40th with a score of 213.20. Freshman Lauren LaPeter finished just behind Kuhn, placing 45th with a score of 154.35. Neither score qualified for the finals.
"We have to be sharper in the morning to put ourselves in a better position for possible final spots," said Novitsky.
At the end of day two of competition, the Illini sit at 12th overall with a score of 117. Tomorrow's session will begin at 10 a.m. CT with preliminary rounds of the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and three-meter diving. The final rounds of those events, as well as the 200 freestyle relay will begin at 5:30 p.m. CT.
