BRADENTON, Fla. – Illini men's tennis incoming freshman, Keenan Mayo, earned the Eddie Herr ITF Doubles title on Sunday afternoon at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Mayo teamed up with Bulgaria's Adrian Andreev to secure five match victories.
"We are excited for Keenan to take this prestigious title," said head coach Brad Dancer. "Since officially becoming an Illini, we are excited about the growth he is already showing and confident this is just a beginning for him."
Mayo and Andreev opened the tournament with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Grant and Nanda. The pair would then top Villar and Yatsuk in the second round, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. Mayo and Andreev met the No. 1 overall seeds, Mejia and Park in the quarterfinals and secured a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory. The duo then defeated Jachuck and Sarkar, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 to advance to Sunday's final.
On Sunday, Mayo and Andreev earned the doubles title with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over the No. 8 seeded pairing of Fierros and Tashbulatov.
The doubles title is the second for Mayo this year after a win in the Copa Barranquilla tournament in Barranquilla, Colombia in January.
