CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois volleyball team received an at-large berth in the 2017 NCAA Division I Championship and will be making its 24th appearance in program history when they travel to Seattle, Washington, to face Hawaii in the first round of the tournament.
The Illini (21-10, 12-8 B1G) will face Hawaii (20-7, 14-2 Big West) at 7 p.m. CT in the first round of the tournament in the Alaska Airlines Arena on Friday (December 1).
Host and No. 8 seed Washington (24-7, 14-6 Pac-12) will take on LIU Brooklyn (20-9, 11-3 NEC) in the other first round matchup at 9:30 p.m. CT. The winners of each match will play at 9 p.m. CT on Saturday (December 2).
Illinois is making their eighth postseason appearance in the last 10 seasons and is 38-22 all-time in postseason play. The Illini are 1-8 against the Rainbow Wahine, earning a 3-0 win in Honolulu in 1992.
The Big Ten earned the second-most bids with eight to this season's tournament, with the eight selections marking the 25th time in as many years that at least six Big Ten teams have been selected to the tournament. Penn State enters the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, while No. 5 Nebraska and No. 7 Minnesota also earned top-16 seeds. Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Wisconsin joined the Illini in receiving at-large bids to the tournament.
The top 16 teams earned national seeds with Florida, Stanford and Kentucky rounding out the top four seeds.
