Former Illini Rajeev Ram Wins Mixed Doubles Silver Medal at Rio Olympics

Ram and Venus Williams teamed up for mixed doubles at the Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO – Former Illini Men's Tennis All-American, Rajeev Ram, won the silver medal with Venus Williams on Sunday afternoon. The American duo faced fellow-Team USA members, Jack Sock and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the gold medal match.

After taking the first set 7-6(3), Sock and Mattek-Sands would take the next set, 6-1, and then the super tiebreaker, 10-3. The Rio Olympics are the first for Ram and the first medal of his career. Ram is also the first tennis player in Illini men's tennis history to compete in the Olympic games.

Ram competed for the Fighting Illini for one season in 2003, when the Orange and Blue won the 2003 National Championship and compiled a perfect 32-0 record. Ram also won the NCAA doubles title that season with Brian Wilson.

Head Coach Brad Dancer on Ram's latest achievement…

"[A silver medal] is just an amazing feather in Raj's cap. He's accomplished so much in his career and this week just adds to his legacy. He is a great ambassador for the program."
