University of Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman announced Monday that Howard Milton has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development.
Milton, an accomplished fundraiser with more than 15 years of experience in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA), will be charged with leading athletics development as the unit enters a critical period of aggressive growth.
"I am pleased to add Howard Milton's voice to our team of senior leaders, and I look forward to seeing the contributions he will make to the overall direction of Illinois Athletics," Whitman said. "Howard enjoys a stellar reputation with our donors and across campus. In talking with his colleagues in the Office of Athletics Development and throughout DIA, people are excited about his trademark enthusiasm and the energy he will undoubtedly infuse into our development operation."
Milton joined the DIA in December 2000, working in event management. He transitioned to the development office in July 2005, spending the last 11 years fostering relationships with Illini supporters while also overseeing the $169.5 million Illinois Renaissance campaign of State Farm Center, directing premium seating sales efforts for both football and basketball and managing the Fighting Illini car program.
"I am excited about this opportunity and honored that Josh has entrusted me to lead our development team," Milton said. "The University of Illinois is a special place; I have learned that firsthand during my years working with our loyal and committed donors. We have a long-term plan that will position Fighting Illini Athletics for years of prosperity. Alongside an experienced, talented fundraising staff, we will work hard to achieve our goals and give our student-athletes a world-class experience."
In addition to Milton's new lead role, a reorganization has resulted in increased duties for several members of the I FUND team. Zach Goines, Associate Athletics Director for Development, will relocate to Champaign and serve as the unit's deputy administrator after working in the Chicago office since 2012. In addition to providing daily direction to the development staff, Goines will lead strategic planning efforts while continuing to handle major gifts.
Haven Fields has been elevated to Assistant Athletics Director for Development, charged with leading the DIA's Chicago office. Fields is a 10-year veteran of athletics development who joined the Illini in 2014 as associate director of development in Chicago.
Carrie Ummel, who has 16Â years of experience in various capacities for Fighting Illini Athletics, has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director. Ummel will maintain her fundraising duties in major gifts while additionally leading a team of development staffers, providing oversight and mentorship in the organization.
"We have outstanding people leading our development team who are committed to providing critical financial resources for our student-athletes," Whitman said. "In preparation for an ambitious fundraising campaign, the passion and drive of this group is paramount as we work to build a championship program across our athletics department."
