ROSEMONT, Ill. – Illinois Women's Tennis junior Louise Kwong has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after an undefeated weekend. The announcement was made by the league office on Tuesday, April 5. This marks the first weekly honor of the Toronto, Ontario, native's career in the Orange and Blue.
Kwong produced a pair of wins at No. 1 singles along with two victories in the top doubles slot. On Friday, Kwong defeated Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen in straight sets of 6-1, 6-4. She worked to a 7-5, 6-4 win on Sunday against No. 75 Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke.
In doubles, Kwong and Ines Vias have been a force, earning a top-50 ranking in all but one poll since February 10. Over the weekend, the duo was ranked 46th. In her three seasons, Kwong has yet to relinquish a game against Nebraska in doubles play.
The junior worked with Vias to take down Iowa's Reimchen/Douglas duo 6-4 and went on to defeat Nebraska's Lehmicke/Andersson in a 6-0 decision. Kwong and Vias are a perfect 5-0 in Big Ten play and are now 19-6 on the year when working together.
Kwong is the first Illinois player to earn the Athlete of the Week honor this season. The last Illinois athlete to collect the honor was Melissa Kopinski on April 21, 2015.
