URBANA, Ill. - The No. 10 ranked Fighting Illini men's tennis team swept Purdue, 4-0, in their first home conference match of the season Sunday afternoon. The Illini improve to 10-7 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
"You always feel good about getting a conference win," head coach Brad Dancer said. "We've won some close doubles points against Indiana and Purdue, and I think you need to be in those tough situations. We were gritty in doubles today. Awesome for Page to get the first singles win and set the tone for the rest of the guys."
The Orange and Blue garnered the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Illinois earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Julian Childers and Brian Page defeated Hanayama/Silva 6-1 on court three. As Purdue won the doubles match on court two, the doubles point came down to a tiebreak on court one. Aleks Vukic and Aron Hiltzik came out with victory over Sochurek/Medinilla by the scores 7-6 (6).
The Illini kept the momentum in singles, taking the first set on five courts. Brian Page quickly increased the Illini lead, as he defeated Lucas Dages 6-3, 6-2.
Within minutes of each other, Aron Hiltzik and Julian Childers garnered victories on courts three and four, respectively, to secure the win over the Boilermakers. Aron topped Ricky Medinilla 6-3, 6-3. Childers had the clincher with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dominik Sochurek.
