Illinois 76, Minnesota 71 (OT)
Williams Arena, Minneapolis, Minn. // Jan. 23, 2016 // Attendance: 11,026
- Illinois improved to 12-3 at Williams Arena since 2000, three more wins than any other visiting team in that span.
- With the five-point, overtime victory, the Fighting Illini are now 4-1 in overtime and 23-10 in games decided by five points or less under head coach John Groce, who is in his fourth season at Illinois.
- The win was Illinois' first true road win of the season and ended an eight-game road skid dating back to Feb. 7, 2015, at Michigan State (59-54).
- The Fighting Illini dominated the rebounding battle against the Gophers, 49-38. Both the 49 total rebounds and +11 margin are season-highs for the Illini, who entered the game averaging 31.3 rebounds per game and with a -5.4 rpg margin. It marked the first time Illinois won the rebounding battle since Dec. 19 vs. South Dakota (36-33).
- Illinois used a 16-0 run at the end of regulation and start of overtime to take control of the game. With the Gophers leading 60-55, a Kendrick Nunn three-pointer at 1:05 started the run and then Malcolm Hill hit two free throws with 32 seconds left to tied the game at 60. In overtime, Illinois scored the first 11 points to take a 71-60 lead with 1:49 left and then held on for the 76-71 final.
- Junior guard Malcolm Hill became the 47th player in Illinois history to score 1,000 career points when he knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:26 left in overtime. He added two more points to finish the night with 28 for the game and 1,002 for his career.
- Hill pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with his 28 points, to register his fourth double-double this season (and of his career). He hit a career-high 13 free throws on 14 attempts.
- Redshirt Freshman forward Michael Finke pulled down 16 rebounds to shatter his previous career-high of eight. That total equals the most for an Illini in a game since Meyers Leonard pulled down 16 boards against Cornell on 12/19/11. Finke also added nine points and four assists to go along with his career night on the glass. Â
- Junior center Maverick Morgan had a big night, pouring in 14 points and pulling down seven rebounds, both one off his career highs of 15 and eight.
- Junior point guard Jaylon Tate dished out six assists, equaling his season high, and had zero turnovers. He has 49 assists against just 18 turnovers on the season.Â
