CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - On a blustery Friday night with the wind chill below freezing, Illinois and No. 11 Wisconsin played to a 0-0 draw in a double-overtime Big Ten battle. Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Wheatley totaled a season-high 10 saves to give the Orange and Blue their eighth shutout of the season. The Illini (10-7-2), who locked up the No. 7 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament, finished 5-6-2 in the Big Ten, while the Badgers (15-2-2) maintained second place at 9-2-2 in league play.
"The conditions were certainly challenging for both teams," head coach Janet Rayfield said. "We fought and defended pretty well. We didn't give them too many chances, and for the most part, we defended the way we wanted to defend. We felt like we could have possessed the ball a little bit more. Playing the No. 11 team in the country to a scoreless tie for 110 minutes certainly says a lot about your defense."
Illinois played with the wind in the first half and held an 8-3 advantage in shots. Senior Jannelle Flaws took all four of her team-high four shots in the first frame. Flaws was held scoreless for the third consecutive game, marking the first time that has happened since the start of 2013.
Wisconsin took control of possession in the second half when it started playing with the wind. The Badgers notched a 13-3 shot advantage in the second stanza. After making one save in the first half, Wheatley stopped five shots on target in the second half.
The Badgers continued to put pressure on the Orange and Blue, as they took all 10 shots during the two overtime periods. Wheatley made two saves in each OT period, including her 10th and final one with 15 seconds remaining.
"Playing in these conditions is really tough for a goalkeeper and I think you saw both keepers do some great things," Rayfield said. "Claire owned her box and read some tough through balls in the wind. Claire made some really good saves on balls floating in due to the wind. She did a great job adjusting to the wind and keeping the ball out of the net to keep it a scoreless tie."
The Illini back line of junior Amy Feher, sophomore Hope D'Addario and freshmen Abby Elinsky and Sarah Warren played strong throughout the game to maintain the 0-0 draw, as Wisconsin finished with a 26-11 edge in shots and 6-3 mark in corner kicks.
It marked the first 0-0 draw of the season for Illinois and first since playing Washington State to a stalemate in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Prior to the game, Illinois recognized its two seniors, Megan Green and Noelle Leary, as part of Senior Night. Both Green and Leary started their final home game at the Illinois Soccer Stadium.
Up Next: The Illini will play their quarterfinal game of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m. CT. With the No. 2 seed not yet decided, No. 7 Illinois will play either Wisconsin or Michigan. The Wolverines must defeat Purdue on Saturday to earn the No. 2 seed, while a loss or tie will keep the Badgers slotted in second place.
