URBANA, Ill. - The Illini women's tennis team (7-8) claimed its third straight match Wednesday afternoon, as it downed Illinois State (5-8), 7-0, at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. Illinois swept both singles and doubles for the first time this season en route to victory.
"There were some competitive matches today so it was definitely worthwhile to get this match in," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "We were able to get some people match experience heading back into Big Ten play this weekend. Because of our current situation, everyone has to be ready to play. Annie (McCarthy) has stepped up every time and we have a ton of confidence in her right now."
The Illini secured all three doubles for the second time in three matches and carried the momentum into singles, where McCarthy easily handled Gabriella Phillips for her second dual win of the season. No. 96 sophomore Rachael White made it 3-0 with her 13th win of the year and junior Amy Allin clinched the match with her fourth consecutive win and team-best 19th to improve to 5-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Freshman Allison Falkin added her 14th win playing at the No. 3 spot for the first time this season, while sophomore Breanne Smutko earned her ninth victory on the year and redshirt senior Leigh Finnegan rallied back to close out the evening with her second dual win and fourth overall.
Illinois is back at home Friday to host Iowa at 3 p.m. at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
