CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini women's soccer team earned its sixth victory of the season, 1-0, against the Louisiana State Tigers at Illinois Soccer Stadium on Friday. Senior defender Krystin Miller notched her first goal of the season on a penalty kick while senior goalkeeper Alexandra Kapicka earned her second individual shutout of the season in net, turning away two shots.
The Illini's only goal came in the 84th minute of play. Miller converted the first penalty kick of 2010 for Illinois, blasting the attempt past Tigers' goalie Megan Kinneman.
"Krystin knows [penalty kicking] is a job that we count on her for," Rayfield said. "She is prepared for it, confident in her ability and she strikes the ball well."
A very physical contest, with the Tigers being flagged for 16 fouls while the Illini were whistled for 11, the penalty kick was a result of junior Marissa Mykines being knocked down as she sprinted into the box. Mykines was chasing a ball served into open space and had beaten the Tiger's defense to the ball when an LSU defender pushed her from behind.
For the contest, Illinois totaled 18 shots while LSU notched eight. The Orange and Blue earned two corner kick opportunities to the Tigers' one while Kinneman made nine saves in net for LSU.
The Fighting Illini (6-1-0) return to Illinois Soccer Stadium to host Louisville on Sept. 19 with a 1 p.m. game.
