BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Illinois women's track and field team had four Illini athletes in action on day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Complex. Senior Elizabeth Boyle scored a point with an eighth-place finish in the 10,000m while senior Alecia Beckford-Stewart sits in second place and junior Kelly Washington is sixth in the heptathlon through four events. Senior Theresa Brokaw also ran the 10,000m and placed 20th.
Beckford-Stewart has a total of 3,236 points after Friday's competition, just behind Wisconsin's Dorcas Akinniyi who has 3,357 points. She posted a pair of third-place finishes in the field events and two fourth-place efforts in the running events. In the high jump, she cleared 5-6 ½ (1.69m) and scored 842 points while in the shot put, she threw 37-9 ½ (11.52m) and tallied 629 points. She began the competition by timing 14.30 in 100m hurdles for 936 points and clocked a time of 25.64 in the 200m for 829 points.
Washington recorded 3,039 points after four events, which included a victory in the 200m with a time of 25.25. She started the day seventh in the 100m hurdles (15.02) followed by a tied for fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-3 (1.60m). In the shot put, she was sixth at 36-4 ¼ (11.08m). The heptathlon will resume on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. CT with the long jump.
In the 10,000 meters, the last race of day one of the championships, Boyle timed 35:00.39 and scored at Big Tens for the first time in her career. Brokaw clocked a mark of 36:41.80 to wrap up the performances by Illini on day one.
Following the conclusion of the multi-events on Saturday, running trials at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships begin at 1:10 p.m. CT with the 4x100m relay. Women's finals in the shot put, long jump and 3,000m steeplechase will also be contested.
