KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Illinois picked up three event titles on Friday at the SeaRay Relays, including a pair of victories for the second straight week from junior Tamika Robinson at Tennessee's Tom Black Track. The Chicago, Ill., native shattered her personal best with a time of 13.18 to win the 100m hurdles and paced the 100m dash field with a time of 11.76. Sophomore Kendall McCaugherty added the other event title, as she won the high jump with a personal-best leap of 5-8 ¾ (1.75m).
"It was a really good day with almost everyone running personal bests, so we are moving in the right direction," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "Tamika ran very well and went up against an Olympian in the hurdles, which was a big help for her confidence. Kendall also made some attempts at some really good heights as well."
In the 400m hurdles, two Illini placed in the top six, with sophomore Latoya Griffith (58.59) in third and classmate Jayla McArthur (1:01.09) running a personal best in sixth.
Sophomore Ashley Kelly posted a personal best in the 200m and placed fifth with a time of 24.09 while freshman Kayla Smith (24.34) finished 11th and junior Cheria Morgan (24.61) was 19th in the event. Kelly also placed sixth in the 100m, resetting her personal best with a time of 11.99, and Morgan (12.07) came in 13th followed by Smith (12.17) in 21st.
The Illini turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in the 400m, as sophomore Ryisha Boyd (55.13) finished seventh and junior Melissa Bates (55.28) placed ninth. Freshman Marissa Golliday (55.87) came in 14th while senior Paris Streeter (56.60) was 20th in the event.
In the seeded 1,500m section, junior Shannon Phelan placed sixth with a personal-best time of 4:29.37, while freshman Madeline Aufmann turned in a solid performance in the unseeded 1,500m section, finishing third with a personal-best time of 4:41.08. In the 3,000m, senior Theresa Brokaw paced the Illini effort with a time of 10:06.43 to place fourth followed by freshman Courtney Yaeger (10:23.43) in 10th and junior Maggie Mulchrone (10:41.91) in 15th.
In the field events, freshman Maria Scheet placed 11th in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6 (3.20m), and senior Danyelle Michelini finished 15th in the discus with a throw of 112-5 (34.27m).
On Saturday, the Illinois women's track and field team wraps up competition at the SeaRay Relays, with athletes scheduled to compete in the long jump, shot put and relays. Four Illini distance runners also are slated to run at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic, as senior Angela Bizzarri makes her outdoor debut in the 1,500m, and senior Elizabeth Boyle, junior Chantelle Groenewoud and sophomore Kristin Sutherland are set to debut in the 5,000m. Bizzarri will run in the premiere section at 8 p.m. MST (10 p.m. CST) followed by the three Illini in the 5,000m at 8:15 p.m. MST (10:15 p.m. CST) on Saturday.
