CHARLESTON, Ill. - Freshman Jordan Hebert took home the 3,000m title with a season-best time of 8:36.17, highlighting a small contingent of Illinois men's track and field athletes at the EIU Friday Night Special. In that same race, sophomore Phil Pompei came in third with a time of 8:43.86, while freshman Ryan Lynn added another third-place showing in the 800m with a time of 1:56.81.
Junior Alex Baldwin was the next highest finisher in any event, finishing fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 15-7 3/4 (4.77m). Freshman Steve Monte was 10th in the event with a height of 15-1 3/4 (4.62m).
Sophomore Roger Jones competed in both horizontal jumping events, coming in at fifth in the long jump with a leap of 21-6 (6.55m) and eighth in the triple jump with a bound of 41-7 3/4 (12.69m). Sophomore Shawn Ledbetter took 14th in the long jump with a mark of 20-3 (6.17m).
Sophomore Eric Johannigmeier placed ninth in the mile with a time of 4:25.47. In the throwing events, freshman Brett Einbecker turned in a 10th-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 48-4 ½ (14.74m), while freshman Brett Ramirez finished 12th in the weight throw with a mark of 49-11 ¾ (15.23m).
Next week, Illinois heads to the men's Big Ten Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 27-28 at the University Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, Minn.
