WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
In the second day of competition Thursday afternoon at the Big Ten Championships, the Illini 200 free relay team of Erin Lamb, Meghan Mason, Brittany McGowan and Kristen Manias recorded the sixth fastest time (1:33.17) in school history, while sophomore Britni Fisher led the way on the boards in the one-meter dive.
"The relay was a solid performance," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We were pretty strong altogether and Manias had a great split on the anchor leg. Overall, it was a good accomplishment and we have to keep carrying on with that momentum."
In one-meter diving, Fisher posted a team-best score of 253.50 to finish in 16th place and scored points for Illinois marking the first time an Illinois diver has accomplished this feat at the Big Ten Championships in over 10 years.
"Overall, I couldn't be happier with how everyone performed," diving coach Chris Waters said. "We've been looking for consistency all year and we were consistent today. It really paid off for Fisher."
Freshman Erin Rodriguez led the way for the Orange and Blue in the 200 individual medley prelims, placing sixth all-time with a 2:04.90 finish, while Manias finished with the top time for the Illini in the 50 free prelims (23.44) to rank sixth all-time and Lamb was close behind with a time of 23.65 to rank 10th in school history in the event. In the 500 free prelims, senior Kristen Kloeckener was the top finisher for the Illini, as she clocked in at 5:00.75 and shaved four seconds off her season best time.
"Overall, we swam better today and calmed down a little bit," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We put together smarter races and it was good to see a lot of people stepping up and having lifetime-best performances."
Day three gets underway tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and three-meter diving.
