Tucson, Ariz. - A quartet of Illinois men's track and field throwers got an early start to the outdoor season, competing on Saturday at the Willie Williams Classic hosted by Arizona.

Sophomore Casey Fonnesbeck was the Illini's top finisher, taking third in the shot put with a throw of 54-5 1/4. In the discus, senior Travis Leonard placed fifth with a mark of 153-0, while freshman Brett Einbecker made his Illinois debut by placing eighth (145-1). Sophomore Matt McHugh competed in the hammer throw, taking sixth (176-8).

Illinois competes as a split squad next weekend on March 27-28, with some of the team heading to the Arizona State Invitational and others competing at the Southern Illinois Spring Classic.
