Athens, Ga. - Freshman Allison Buckley became Illinois' first NCAA All-American during Thursday's afternoon session of the 2008 National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships in Athens Ga. Buckley scored a 9.825 on her first event, the balance beam, to tie for sixth place and earn second team All-America honors.

Buckley competed in the all-around during session I at Stegeman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Georgia, scoring a 38.525 to place 18th overall. Her day started on beam, where only a small step on her dismount prevented her from finishing in the top-four and advancing to Saturday's individual event finals. Gymnasts that place 1-4 on each event (including ties) in each of today's two sessions advance to Saturday's event finals and are first team All-Americans. Those that place 5-8 on each event in each session are second team All-Americans.

Illinois sophomore Nicole Cowart will compete in the all-around during tonight's evening session, which begins at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT. A complete recap of both Buckley and Cowart's day at the NCAA Championships, including quotes, will follow the completion of tonight's session.
