CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois continued its domination at home on Thursday, taking a 120-66 lead over the Michigan State Spartans at the conclusion of the first session of the two-day meet at the ARC Pool. The Illini grabbed seven first-place finishes out of 10 events.
"I was happy with how we came out today," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We got a little behind in the beginning with medley relay, but they battled through and got the momentum going."
Senior Marissa Clapp shaved 1.15 seconds off her time and beat the ARC pool record that she set last week in the 200 IM (2:04.45). Clapp took her second event title in the 100 breast (1:05.74).
Freshman Torrey Loper took her first collegiate event title with an exciting finish in the 100 free (10:28.93). Junior Kristen Kloeckener swam to her first event title of the season in the 200 free (1:54.23). The Illini concluded the first session by taking the event title in the 400 free (3:33.70) swam by Kloeckener, Katie Theissen, Kelly Kunkel and Meghan Mason.
"They raced with some heart because they know Big Ten is always going to be tough competition all they way around," Novitsky said. "We can't sit on our laurels right now because we have to come back in session two tomorrow."
The Illini jump back into the pool Friday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. for the second session of the two-day meet against Michigan State at the ARC pool.
