ARLINGTON, Texas - Illinois took a lead in the first inning and led for most of the game but let the lead get away late as Texas-Arlington used a seven-run eighth inning to win 12-5 and sweep the Illini in the three-game series. Catcher Lars Davis hit Illinois' first home run of the season and rightfielder Daniel Webb was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.
"We have to play a full game; we haven't done that yet," Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said. "We had several opportunities on defense to make plays that ended up leading to runs that could've changed the complexion of the game."
For the third straight game, Illinois scored in the first inning. Leftfielder Ryan Snowden singled through the left side to start the game and moved to second when third baseman Brandon Wikoff ripped a single through the right side that nearly clipped Snowden. Snowden advanced to third on Davis' long flyout and scored on Webb's single into left, putting the Illini up 1-0.
But just as they did on Saturday, the Mavericks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Davis changed all that with one swing, blasting a 2-0 offering over the fence in right field for a two-run homer after Wikoff had walked with one out in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Illini tacked on another run in the fifth when centerfielder Kyle Hudson walked, stole second and advanced to third on Snowden's flyout to deep right field. He then scored on Wikoff's groundout to second base, pushing the lead to 4-2.
In the sixth, Webb smacked a lead-off double to left-center, moved to third on Rohde's groundout and scored on DH Mike Giller's base hit, giving Illinois a 5-2 lead. But the Mavs fought back in the bottom half, using a two-run homer to cut the margin to 5-4.
But UTA tied the game in the seventh after a lead-off triple fell between Hudson and Webb and the runner scored on a groundout. Then the Mavs exploded for a season-high seven runs in the eighth inning on six hits, three walks and a hit batter to take a commanding 12-5 lead.
In the game, Wikoff was 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two walks. Starting pitcher Tanner Roark turned in a quality outing in his first start of the year, allowing four hits - two earned - on seven hits and two walks during his five and 1/3 innings of work.
Up Next: The Illini travel to Bradenton, Fla., next Friday for a seven-game stretch in eight days at the IMG Academies. Illinois begins the trip with a 1:30 p.m. first pitch against Vermont on Friday.
