ARLINGTON, Texas - Illinois took the lead twice in the first three innings but Texas-Arlington scored 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on the way to a 13-6 win at Clay Gould Ballpark. Third baseman Brandon Wikoff collected his fifth multiple-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort, two RBI and a run, and centerfielder Kyle Hudson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a steal.
"We're giving up too many big innings on the mound," Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said. "Last night it was too many walks and today we gave up too many hits. Overall, we're just allowing too many men on base per inning."
For the second time in as many days, the Illini struck in the first inning. Leftfielder Ryan Snowden opened the game with a flare single into left and stole second. Shortstop Shawn Roof moved him over with a groundout and Snowden scored when third baseman Brandon Wikoff reached on an error by the second baseman. Wikoff advanced to third on catcher Lars Davis' single off the shortstop's glove and scored on rightfielder Daniel Webb's groundout to give the Illini a 2-0 lead.
UTA tied the game in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs off Illinois starter Mike Stankiewicz, but the Orange and Blue pulled back ahead in the third with a run. Roof was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then stole second and third. Wikoff chopped a single over the first baseman's head to drive him in and Davis followed with another base hit, but both runners were stranded as Illinois took a 3-2 lead.
The Mavs drew even once again in the fourth inning, scoring a run in a two-out rally that was comprised of three singles and a wild pitch, tying the game 3-3. UTA pulled ahead one inning later, using a four-run frame to take a 7-3 lead after five innings.
"We jumped out early, which was good to see after last night's loss," Hartleb said. "And our hit total was good, but we need to get hits in key situations."
Illinois pushed one across in the sixth after second baseman Joe Bonadonna led off with a triple and scored on centerfielder Kyle Hudson's infield hit, cutting the margin to 7-4. But the Mavs fought back with a five-run sixth off Illini reliever Ben Reeser to take a commanding 12-4 lead. UTA added another in the seventh for a 13-5 advantage.
The Orange and Blue got another run in the eighth when first baseman Mike Giller laced a lead-off single and, two outs later, pinch-hitter Craig Lutes walked. Pinch-hitter Nick Stockwell followed by lining a base hit down the left-field line to drive in Giller and cut the margin to 13-5. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Aaron Ifft singled with two outs, moved to second when Giller reached on an error and scored on DH Ryan Hastings' single to left, slicing the deficit to 13-6.
In the game, Davis had a pair of hits and Snowden was 2-for-4 with a run and two steals. Stankiewicz took his second loss of the season after a rough five innings in which he gave up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk.
The Illini and Mavericks finish the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Tanner Roark gets the ball for Illinois, while Kendal Carrillo will toe the rubber for UTA.
