The Illinois men's track and field team completed a successful day of competition in South Bend, Ind., at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday. The Illini tabbed one provisional qualifying time, four new personal-bests, and one new season-best on the day.
Sophomore transfer Lesiba "Shoes" Masheto, won the 400m in a photo finish with a new indoor personal-best and provisional qualifying time of 47.18, which ranks him ninth in the Illinois all-time indoor bests and 16th in the country this season.
Freshmen Jeremy Stevens, Scott Phelps and Brian Beaird all ran new personal bests for the Illini. Stevens ran a 4:12.83 in the mile, while Phelps ran a 1:54.67 and Beaird ran 1:52.68, both in the 800m.
The 4x400m relay team of Masheto and juniors Pierre Bush, Scott Puhse and Paul Johnson ran a season-best 3:14.94, four seconds faster than the previous best time of the season.
"We had major improvement that we needed today and we're really excited to compete again next week," head coach Wayne Angel said. "The freshmen had breakthroughs where they really needed them."
The Illini return to action on Friday, Feb. 9, in Ames, Iowa at the Cyclone Classic.
