Huskies Slip Past Illini, 4-3

URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois women's tennis team battled until the very end, but it was the Washington Huskies who captured the final singles match to defeat the Illini 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. In the contest, freshman Megan Fudge won her second straight singles match in the No. 1 spot since her return from injury, while junior Momei Qu and freshman Kristina Minor also are now riding a two-match win streak at No. 3 doubles.

"We battled extremely hard in singles, and I am very proud of that," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "I thought we worked hard in singles, but regardless of who you play, winning four singles matches against any team is going to be challenging. I thought we put ourselves in a great position to win the match at the end, but it came down to the doubles point. We needed to play as passionately as we did in singles in the doubles portion. "

Overall, the loss dropped Illinois to 2-6 on the season, while Washington improved to 1-7.

The Illini came out firing in their opening doubles matches, but the Huskies were just one shot better at No. 1 and 2 doubles en route to clinching the doubles point. At No. 3 doubles, Qu and Minor (ILL) looked strong from the start, defeating Morgan Ramser and Allison Rainey of Washington, 8-5.

Looking to get back on track, Illinois won at No. 1, 4 and 5 singles behind tough performances from Minor in the No. 5 spot and straight-set victories from sophomore Bryce Marable (ILL) at No. 4 singles, 7-6(4), 7-5 over Rainey (WASH) and Fudge (ILL) over Tara Simpson (WASH), 7-5, 6-4, in the top slot.

On the other courts, Washington put the pressure back on Illinois as it posted wins at No. 5 and 3 singles to tie the match.

With the match knotted at 3-3, Shivani Davé (ILL) and Joyce Ardies (WASH) started a third-set battle to determine who would walk off the court victorious. Davé, however, was broken by Ardies with the set tied at 4-4 before the Huskies' netter served out the match to clinch the win for Washington.

The Illini finish their eight-match home stand with a contest against Illinois State on Wednesday, March 7, at 5 p.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center.
