The Fighting Illini men's track and field finished their first day of competition in the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Orange and Blue finished the day qualifying three athletes for tomorrow's finals. Overall, the team sits in eighth place after day one.
"Our performances today were solid despite being at less than full strength," head coach Wayne Angel said. "The bright spots of the day were Nick Brown taking the runner-up spot in long jump and Jared Richardson qualifying for the mile finals as a freshman."
Junior Nick Brown scored eight points for the Illini, placing second in the long jump with a leap of 24'09.00". Also scoring points for the team was the distance medley relay who placed fifth with a 9:57.50. Members of the relay team included sophomore Lesiba Masheto, and freshmen Brian Beaird, Jeremy Stevens and Jared Richardson.
The Illini enter tomorrow's competition with three spots in finals. Masheto qualified for the 600m final with a time of 1:19.32, while Pratt heads to the 60m hurdles final with an 8.06. Richardson qualified for finals in the mile with an impressive 4:08.90.
