The Fighting Illini women's track and field team concluded competition at the Indiana Team Classic in Bloomington, Ind., today, turning in solid performances with two provisional qualifying marks and a school record being tied in the pole vault. Overall, the Illini had 18 top-five finishes in the non-team scoring meet.
Junior Ashley Whittaker tied the record in pole vault with a height of 12'07.50" to place third overall. Additionally, freshman Angela Bizzarri won the mile with a provisional qualifying time of 4:46.74.
Senior Yvonne Mensah also tossed in a provisional qualifying mark of 42'04.25", taking first in triple jump. Mensah, who had a stellar day on the track, also claimed second in the 200m with a time of 24.19 and fourth in the 60m with a 7.58.
"We showed some definite improvement in a lot of areas, but we still have a long way to go," head coach Gary Winkler said. "We still need to figure out placement as far as who goes where, but today was a good day for us because we got to compete against great competition."
The Illini had four additional second-place finishes on the day, including junior Mariesa Greene in high jump (5'08.00"), freshman Katie Engel in the 800m (2:12.45), senior Cassie Hunt in the 300m (9:41.96) and LaNeisha Waller in the 60m hurdles (8.50).
The Illini return to action at home when they host the Carle Health Alliance Invite on Saturday, Jan. 27.
