Illinois Drops Road Contest At Penn State

Illinois women's basketball team lost to Penn State tonight, 76-41 in front of 7,229 fans in State College, Pa. With the defeat, the Illini fall to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play while the Lady Lions improved to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten.

Penn State used a 17-0 run over a six minute span near the end of the first half to break open what was a 16-16 tie. The Illini went 0-for-7 over that same amount of time and trailed 33-20 at halftime, which was the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.

For the game, the Lady Lions shot 53.6 percent, including 61.5 percent in the second half. Penn State also drained nine three-point baskets (9-15, 60 percent), compared to one for the Fighting Illini (1-6). Illinois was under 30 percent shooting in the first half and were held to 33 percent for the game.

The Lions pounded the Illini on the glass, out-rebounding them 40-24 while Jennifer Harris scored 26 points and Tanisha Wright added 16 for Penn State.

Illinois' leading scorer was Angelina Williams who had 17 points. Tiffanie Guthrie joined Williams in double figures with 13, but no other Illini was able to score more than four points.

The Illini return to action this Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Assembly Hall vs. Wisconsin.
