Champaign, Ill. -
The University of Illinois baseball team got a 3-1 win over Indiana in what was supposed to be the first game of a doubleheader on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Illinois Field. The win moves Illinois to 14-20 overall and 6-8 in the Big Ten while Indiana falls to 22-16 overall and 6-8 in Conference.
Saturday's win moves Head Coach Itch Jones one away from 1,200 in his career.
After three scoreless innings, Eric Eymann got Illinois on the board in the fourth when he sent a three-run home run over the left field wall top open a 3-0 lead. The home run, his second of the season, came with one out and Chad Frk, who led off with a single, and Ryan Rogowski, who walked, on base.
And that would be all the offense Illinois would need as senior righthander Ted Rowe threw a complete game, allowing only one run on seven hits in seven complete innings of work. He walked one and struck out three while improving to 2-5 on the year.
Indiana got on the board in the top half of the seventh. Kevin Mahar led off with a walk, went to second on a single and third on a fielders choiced before scoring on a two-out wild pitch.
IU starter Josh Lewis suffered the loss, falling to 3-5 on the year, after allowing three runs on five hits in 3 1/3. He walked two and struck out there.
Illinois and Indiana conclude their four-game series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm Sunday.
