Ames, Iowa -
Sophomore long jumper Josh Fournier set a personal best jump and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Championships with a jump of 24'09.25" this weekend to finish third overall as the Illinois men's track and field team competed at the Iowa State Invitational Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Josh Fournier's distance was enough to earn him a provisional qualification for the NCAA meet and increase his personal-best from the 24'05.50 which was set last year as a freshman. With his provisional qualifying jump, Josh now has a chance to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships which are being held March 14-15 in Fayeteville, Ark.
Also having a strong performance this weekend was Illini pole vaulter Marty Keifer who finished second overall with a jump of 16'10.75".
Clint Cherco also performed well as he finished second in the 600-yard run. Cherco finished with a time of 1:11.44 which earned him a second-place finish overall. Senior Aaron Wahls also added to the number of impressive Illini performances by setting a personal best of his own in the mile with a time of 4:09.11. His time was fast enough to earn an eighth-place finish overall in the event.
Illinois' next action will be March 1-2 when they host the 2003 Big Ten Men's Indoor Championships at the U of I Armory Track in Champaign. Tickets for the Championships can be purchased by calling the Illinois Athletics Ticket Office at 1-866-ILLINI-1.
