The University of Illinois Swimming and Diving team finished the 2003-04 home campaign by defeating Iowa State 185.00-115.00 and Southern Illinois 241.00-59.00. The seniors went out in style as they led the Illini to 11 individual and two relays victories. The Orange and Blue now are 4-0 on the season.
"We came out with a lot of emotion today, they were determined to do well for the seniors on Senior Day. Not only did we want to win for the seniors today, but we wanted to meet our team goal for going undefeated at home," Head Coach Sue Novitsky said. "I just can't say enough about our seniors, they really stepped it up today and all of them had season-best times today, which showed how much they wanted it today."
Senior Day was especially unique for senior Ilkay Dikmen. In her last day of competition at IMPE she broke her current pool records in the 100 and 200 breast.
In the 100 breast she finished with a time of 1:03.30 and in the 200 breast she swam to a time of 2:15.36. Dikmen also earned "B" standard qualifying times with the two record performances.
The Fighting Illini featured a pair of triple winners, Crystal McAdam and Barbie Viney. McAdam took the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.36, the 200 IM in 2:06.35, and the 500 free in 4:58.25. The freshman, Viney continued her rapid success in the freestyle event, winning the 50 free in 24.03, the100 free in 51.82, and the 200 free in 1:51.92.
In the exciting 200 medley relay, the Illini won with the group of Meghan Farrell, Ilkay Dikmen, Christina Brunka, and Crystal McAdam who swam to a mark of 1:48.15. The Illini then closed the meet with a thrilling victory in the 400 free relay with the team of Barbie Viney, Kirsten Koepcke, Christina Brunka, and Meghan Farrell in a time of 3:30.41.
Lisa Fish finished second in the 3-Meter dive as she posted a score of 226.75 and ended up fourth in the 1-Meter dive with a score of 217.15.
Illinois will get two weeks of rest before they travel to Bloomington, Ind., where they will participate in the Indiana Invitational, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 21-23. The meet will run all day, all three days.
