The University of Illinois swimming and diving team currently stands in second place at the Miami Invitational, which runs through Saturday on the campus of Miami University. Kenyon College currently leads with 208 points, followed by Illinois at 180, Indiana at 148, Johns Hopkins with 134 and Emory University rounds out the top five with 116 points.
"We really raced well tonight," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "It was a good first night, and we'll be looking to come back with a big day tomorrow. We're using this weekend as a test run for Big Tens, so we'll be trying to put everything together the next two days."
Illinois started out Thursday's finals with a win in the 800 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 7:33.42. Sophomore Kirsten Koepcke led off the relay with a lifetime-best time of 1:52.53 and Britta Jansson, Amy Downing and Crystal McAdam followed to bring home the win.
In the mile, Koepcke continued to flourish, finishing second in the 1,650 free in a season-best time of 17:04.16. McAdam was fourth in the mile in 17:14.71.
In the platform diving exhibition competition, junior Lisa Fish reset her own school record with a 287.75, bettering her school record mark of 249.35, which she set at last year's Big Ten Championships.
Action at the Miami Invitational continues through Saturday.
