Illinois Splits Doubleheader With Indiana

The University of Illinois baseball team concluded the regular season with a doubleheader split with Indiana University this afternoon in Bloomington. With the split Illinois finishes the year 36-20 overall and 17-11 in the Big Ten. Illinois finishes in a tie for third with Purdue, and will face the Boilermakers in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Illinois dropped game one to Indiana, 6-5, when IU DH Rich Berich hit a two-run home run to center off Illini closer Matt Vorwald in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vorwald, who suffered his first Big Ten loss, dropped to 6-2 on the year.

Illinois won game two, 7-1, behind a complete game, five K performance from starter Andy Dickinson, who moved into second on the team with seven wins. Dickinson (7-2) threw his second career complete game, allowing only six hits.

Dickinson got run support from several areas, as Illinois scored two in the second, one in the third, fourth and sixth and two in the ninth on a D.J. Svihlik pinch hit homer.

Illinois, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will face Purdue in the 12 noon game on Wednesday. No. 2 Penn State faces No. 5 Ohio State at 3:30 and No. 1 Minnesota faces off with No. 6 Northwestern at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
