Illinois Baseball Falls Short Against Purdue, 4-3

University of Illinois baseball (27-13 overall, 13-4 Big Ten) dropped game 1 of the four game series to Purdue University 4-3 this afternoon on the Purdue campus. Starter Ben Quick (5-3) held Illinois to one hit in seven innings before the offense got on track with three hits in the eighth inning. With two outs in the eighth, Brady Ballard was hit by a pitch. D.J. Svihlik hit a triple and Ballard scored. Andy Schutzenhofer hit a double and drove in Svihlik. Luke Simmons then hit a single to score Schutzenhofer. Purdue Boilermaker reliever, Andy Helmer, closed with Rob Fischer. Fischer hit a grounder into a fielder?s choice to end the Illini threat.

Illini starter Jason Anderson pitched well through five and held the Boilermakers scoreless. Anderson ran into trouble in the sixth and allowed two batters on base. Boilermaker Erik Frei hit a homerun over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead. Anderson (7-2, 4-1) suffered his second loss of year and second loss in the Big Ten. Despite throwing a complete game he gave up 3 ERA and had five strikeouts.
