CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Illinois women's softball team continued its trip through South Carolina defeating Charleston Southern twice Monday afternoon moving their record to 3-3 on the season.

In the first game Heather Black recorded Illinois' first shutout, blanking the Lady Buccaneers 3-0. Black evened up her record to 1-1 on the season giving up only six hits and one walk.

Black helped her cause in the fifth inning with a two-out single to right that scored Lori Schaeffer to give the Illini a 1-0 lead.

The Illini increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning. After a one-out triple by Jean Jones, Schaeffer hit her second double of the day driving in Jones. Two batters later Kim Hubbard hit a single scoring Schaeffer.

The Illini broke open the offense in the second game, collecting 15 hits amounting to a 12-2 victory.

Laura Cannizzo went 3 for 3 collecting two singles and one double with two RBI's. Jean Jones also added three hits with two doubles and two RBI's.

With a 2-0 lead the Illini broke the game open in the third inning scoring six times. The Illini collected five straight singles off of Lady Buccaneer pitcher Annie Fredricks, with RBI's from Gina Pasquesi, Kim Colantuono and Cannizzo.

The Illini's offense amounted to more then enough help for starter Pam Almanza. Almanza no-hit the Lady Buccaneers for four and one-third innings, despite the Lady Buccaneers scoring in the third inning off an error. Almanza moved her record to 1-1, allowing one hit and one walk in five innings pitched.

After five innings were finished, the game was ended due to the "No Mercy' rule, when a team is down by more then eight runs.

Illinois will next play tomorrow in a doubleheader against College of Charleston at 4:00 p.m.
