Illinois Athletics - #BigVote - How To Register to Vote

Your voter registration application must be received on or by October 6, 2020 by mail or October 18, 2020 online in order to be eligible to vote in the 2020 General Election. However, if you miss these deadlines, Illinois offers in-person grace period registration.

Deadlines
The deadline to register vote in Illinois for the General Election (November 3, 2020) is October 6, 2020 if you choose to register by mail and October 18, 2020 if you choose to register online. If you miss these deadlines, Illinois does offer grace period registration in-person at designated locations.

Eligibility
In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, be a resident of an Illinois precinct for at least 30 days prior to Election Day, be 18 years old by Election Day, not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction, and not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

» If you are 17 years of age, you may vote in a Primary Election so long as you will be 18 years old by the date of the subsequent General Election Day

» College students do have a choice of whether they want to vote in Illinois or vote in their home state. You may only be registered and vote at one location

Voter Registration Process
In Illinois, you may register online, in-person, or by mailing in a printable application.

» Illinois automatically registers eligible individuals to vote through the Department of Motor Vehicles and other designated automatic voter registration agencies.

The Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative is a non-partisan, conference-wide collaboration that encourages student-athletes to take part in the electoral process by getting registered and educating them on the voting process. The Initiative is being coordinated by a Voter Registration Committee that includes representatives from all 14 Big Ten institutions, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Washington, D.C.) and is part of the Big Ten Conference Anti-Hate and Anti-Racism Coalition.

As this is an election year, there is no better time than now to get registered, get informed and vote.?

The Voter Registration Committee will provide monthly educational resources beginning in July and continuing through the general election on November 3.

October 6 - Illinois Mail in Voter Registration Deadline
October 7 - Vice Presidential Debate: The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT
October 15 - Presidential Debate: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
October 18 - Illinois Online Voter Registration Deadline
October 22 - Presidential Debate: Belmont University, Nashville, TN
October 29 - Requests for a vote-by-mail ballot must be received by the Election Authority
November 2 - Illinois Deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot in-person, last day of early voting
November 3 - Election Day & vote-by-mail ballot must be postmarked by this date
November 17 - All mail-in-ballots must be received by this date in order to be counted

Big Ten Voting Challenge

The Big Ten Voting Challenge is a competition among the 14 universities in the Big Ten Conference. Universities will be competing to win two titles – “Greatest Overall Turnout” and “Greatest Increase in Voting Rates”. The winners will be chosen based on data provided by the National Study on Learning, Voting, and Engagement and announced in Fall 2020. The winning universities will be presented with trophies.
