Illinois' 26th-ranked women's tennis team beat the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday in East Lansing to improve its dual-match season record to 7-2 and its Big Ten dual-match record to 2-0. All victories came in straight-sets.

At No.1, freshman Jennifer McGaffigan defeated Natasha Skogerboe, 6-3,6-2, while senior Simone Kung won at No. 2, 6-0,6-1, over Josie Schmude. Eldina Fazlic, Carla Rosenberg, Eva Choe, and Michelle Webb all contributed victories to complete the Fighting Illini's sweep of singles competition. The Illini continued to dominate the match in doubles competition, registering victories of 8-6 at No.1, 8-4 on No.2, and 8-0 at No.3.

"I am extremely pleased with the way we came to play today," said Head Coach Sujay Lama. "Everybody came fired up and set the tone early with doubles. The execution was as good as we've had all year. It's been a great weekend and it's good to start the Big Ten season 2-0."

Lama continued, "We are looking forward to two great teams coming to Champaign this week and we are going to prepare as best we can. It's a tremendous challenge for our program to play two teams the caliber of Duke and Northwestern at home in a period of seven days."

Illinois' next match is against Duke, Wednesday Feb. 28, at the Atkins Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
